About Us

Eastbourne Car Auctions is an independent, family run business and was established in 1967 by Joy Ashworth. The original quarter acre town centre site in West Street was formerly the stable yard of Elliott the Grocers (Eastbourne’s biggest supermarket of its day). On this site we managed to park about 60 vehicles and during busy auctions the roads around the site became our unofficial car park. During this time we were recognised by the AA magazine ‘Drive’ in their 1978 nationwide survey as one of only four auctions that they could recommended with confidence. This is something we are still proud to shout about today.

After 23 successful years in West Street, we had outgrown the site and, in May 1990, relocated to a 1.5 acre site on Lottbridge Drove. It was at that time that Joy’s son Jonathan Mitchell became MD. Following the introduction of the internet and broadband services, we went through massive changes in the way we promoted and ran our business day-to-day. We have fully embraced the technology that is available and we now have a fully interactive website, www.ebca.co.uk, which displays photographs and inspection reports on all vehicles and offers buyers the convenience of both live and proxy online bidding*.

In order to make way for the new Morrisons supermarket which opened at the end of 2011, we relocated to our current premises in Brampton Road (formerly Trax go-carting circuit), just a couple of minutes away. Following investment on £3.5million and extensive refurbishment our new, state-of-the-art, three acre auction complex was formally opened in September 2012 by Eastbourne MP Steven Lloyd.

To celebrate the first anniversary of the launch of our new site, in September 2013, we held a charity auction. Various local companies and some of our business partners generously donated prizes which, along with a percentage of our proceeds, helped us to raise over £3k for our nominated charity, KidsOut (charity number 1075789).

Chris Lavender of KidsOut (pictured) said:
eca-homepage-left-charity-chris“On behalf of us all at KidsOut, I want to say a big thank to Eastbourne Car Auctions, your clients and staff for their generous support at the very successful event held recently to celebrate the first year at the new site. We were very pleased to be invited to participate at this special event and as you know the various initiatives on the day raised a staggering sum of £3361. Everyone involved can rest assured that this money will be put to good use and we really look forward to working with you again in the future! Once again thank you all for your support and generosity.”
